HCFA announced on August 2 that to improve beneficiary access to heart, liver, and lung transplantation services, it has shortened the waiting period for transplant centers to become approved as Medicare-covered providers of such services. Transplant centers now can gain such approval after only one year, rather than the previously required two-year waiting period. HCFA decided that the number of transplants performed is a better indicator of outcomes than the number of years of experience.
