Oct. 11--The proposed merger of Niagara Mohawk and National Grid could mean the elimination of 500 jobs between upstate New York and New England, and the union representing Niagara Mohawk workers in Buffalo is worried about what that will mean to the city.
"When it was announced around Labor Day that this merger or acquisition was going to take place, we figured at some time we'd sort of be brought into the mix," said Russell Freund, the assistant business manager for Local 97 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, speaking outside of a Buffalo Common Council committee meeting at which he had just listened to a presentation on the merger.
