WASHINGTON _ Explosives loaded on a small boat detonated alongside a U.S. Navy destroyer in Yemen on Thursday, killing at least six sailors and ripping a huge hole in the ship.

Eleven sailors aboard the USS Cole were missing and 35 were injured in the suspected terrorist attack, said Defense Secretary William Cohen. The flooding of the Cole was contained, and the ship was in no danger of sinking, officials said. The explosion was so powerful it rattled windows in buildings on the harbor.

"I have no reason to think this was anything but a senseless act of terrorism," said Adm. Vernon Clark, U.S. chief of naval operations, at a press conference.
