Some 25 years after its creation, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) environmental health laboratory remains an essential resource in assessing individual human exposure to toxic substances in today's environment.
James L. Pirkle, MD, PhD, CDC's deputy director for Science, Division of Laboratory Sciences, National Center for Environmental Health, stressed the importance of biomonitoring - the process of measuring toxins in people, usually through blood or urine specimens, during American Medical Association's 19th Annual Science Reporters Conference held in Atlanta, Georgia, October 1-2, 2000.
