WASHINGTON-Consumers spend more money on that odd game paintball than on lighting fixtures; more on candles than portable lighting. The lighting industry, highly fragmented and dominated by family-run businesses, needs to expand its reach, message and effectiveness or be left behind.

That was the message of Dennis Swanson, president of the 39-store Lamps Plus retail chain and incoming chairman of the American Lighting Association.

Speaking at the annual ALA convention here last week, Swanson vowed to expand membership to the portable lamp segment and step up the emphasis on e-business.
