BEIJING _ China's literary figures long have complained that no Chinese writer has ever won a Nobel Prize. On Friday, after a Chinese author finally was awarded literature's highest honor, the response from China's government-controlled press was absolute silence.
As a result, most Chinese still don't know that Gao Xingjian, who fittingly is famous for his absurdist story lines, won the Nobel Prize for literature.
