WITH the season rapidly drawing to a close, colour in the garden is a rare and precious commodity.
But there are fewer plants more brilliant now than the vibrant blue autumn-flowering gentians.
Their azure tubby blooms are widely recognised and are suitably adorned with all manner of turquoise stipples, ice blue spots and slivers of emerald green. Most autumn-flowering gentians are hybrids whose origins are in the Far East, where they grow on the high plains of the Himalayas, South-west China and Tibet.
