Read the publisher's news release for "The National Audubon Society Sibley Guide to Birds," and you can almost hear the drums roll.
First, (quiet rumble) there was John James Audubon. Then, (a little more volume) came Roger Tory Peterson. And now, (dramatic pause, followed by thunderous drumroll) DAVID ALLEN SIBLEY!
Say who?
Some thought the National Audubon Society was going out on a limb to compare Sibley, a relatively unknown Massachusetts birder/illustrator, to Audubon and Peterson, the ornithological world's most respected artists. But after seeing the 6,644 detailed illustrations in Sibley's 544-page guide, even skeptics are won over.
