Oct. 14--DETROIT--AUTO BOOM NOT SO KIND TO CHRYSLER: Here we are in a boom year. Auto sales are on a record pace.
The industry could sell 17.4 million cars and trucks in the nation this year, topping the old mark set last year by half a million vehicles. Not that long ago, selling 15 million autos a year was considered exceptional.
Here we have a boom. Yet the Chrysler side of DaimlerChrysler AG has struggled.
Lots of good cheer attended the announcement a week ago of plans for a new 2,000- employee plant at the Chrysler transmission manufacturing complex at Kokomo.
Fact is, this isn't the high-flying company of a few years ago. ...
