MAUI, HAWAII -- The tick-borne disease ehrlichiosis is now more common than Rocky Mountain spotted fever in many parts of the Southeast and South Central United States, Dr. Richard F. Jacobs said at a meeting sponsored by the University Childrens Medical Group and the American Academy of Pediatrics.
At Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock, where he is chief of pediatric infectious diseases, Dr. Jacobs is seeing more than 20 cases of the emerging disease for every case of the better-known Rocky Mountain spotted fever.
Laboratory tests are required to distinguish the two diseases, which share remarkably similar clinical signs.
