Mom, her left shoulder shattered but her work ethic intact, anxiously voices her one urgent inquiry of me, "Can you get a column out of this?"
I'm at my parents' home in Indiana, worried about whether Mom's emergency surgery will be successful, whether her pain medication is enough, whether she can be comfortable sleeping in a chair for the next couple of months, whether Dad, at age 84 and hard of hearing, will be able to rush to her aid in the dark of night, whether the incessant phone calls from well-wishers will wear her down and whether Mom's 73-year-old heart can weather the strain of it all.
Mom, however, is worried about my column.
