SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. _ When it comes to improving education, the linchpin of a next-generation work force, the tech elite is finally flexing its muscles _ and it's about time.

Case in point: During a speech to tech executives in Arizona Monday night, Intel Corp. Chief Executive Craig Barrett borrowed a political lapel button from Silicon Valley venture capitalist John Doerr. He held it up to the audience, to emphasize his most important point: the tech elite has the "juice" _ the power and influence _ to make a difference in the sorry state of American public education, Barrett said, "and we'd better exercise it."
