In Europe there is a tradition of museums collecting jewelry, but in the United States jewelry has been the stepchild of the decorative arts, with museums often relegating donations of jewelry to storage. The most notable exception is the Walters Art Gallery in Baltimore, where, at the turn of the century, Henry Walters (1848-1931) assembled a collection of important jewelry ranging from ancient examples the work of the then contemporary designer Rene Lalique.
