PHILADELPHIA - A feisty Barbara Bush took up the defense of her son yesterday, mingling grandmotherly charm with characteristic bluntness to counter charges lobbed by Vice President Al Gore that George W. Bush would ruin Social Security.
Traveling in Pennsylvania, seen as a must-win state in a tight presidential contest, the "famously protective" former first lady, now 75, took to the stage during the second day of the "W. Stands for Women" bus tour to tell about 500 supporters at Montgomery County Community College that Mr. Gore was exaggerating - again.
