South Africa is the only country in sub-Saharan Africa with any significant industrial base and much of this manufacturing capability has grown up to supply the needs of the country's mining industry. Virtually every product required for a mining operation can be sourced on the Witwatersrand, which has literally hundreds of companies engaged in the supply of equipment and services to the mining sector.
