Special foods made for and marketed to kids are a major cause of nutrition problems, says one pediatrician.
"Unfortunately, the category of kids food has been developed by food manufacturers' marketing and advertising departments," says Dr. Lynn Keefe, a pediatrician from Niceville, Fla.
"The eating habits established during a child's first and second years of life affect those of subsequent years. Ideally, kids should be eating the types of food adults eat by age 2 or 3 years. Parents should teach their children the contents of a basic diet and its importance to proper growth and good health, and not succumb to advertisement gimmicks," Keefe says.
