Watching the current government do what it does would be a lot of fun if it wasn't ours. The most recent actions -- the withdrawal from key UN committees because of excessive criticism of Australia's human rights record -- is the latest in a series of steps which have pushed Australia on a course of isolationism unparalleled in our history. Many individual acts have added together to produce this new course: the repeated refusal to apologise to indigenous people, the abuse of basic human rights in the process of handling refugees, reduced foreign-aid funding, and even such minor acts as the winding down of Radio Australia, and the sale of a key Asia-oriented transmitter ...
