A Fresno neighborhood shines again
* The neon-ribbed obelisk atop the Tower Theatre for the Performing Arts in Fresno's Tower district has been a local beacon since 1939, the year Gone with the Wind and The Wizard of Oz debuted. But unlike many grand old movie houses in Central Valley towns, the Tower wasn't downtown. This area, served by streetcar, was Fresno's first suburb to edge outward in the '20s and '30s. Commercial buildings quickly sprang up, and the Tower district was born.
