Something weird is happening to Halloween.
You could say Halloween has always been weird, that it is about being weird, but that's not what I mean.
Halloween has always been about kids being weird, but our society does not seem to want that anymore. My son's elementary school is thinking about banning costumes this year. Many already have.
For several years, kids have not been allowed to bring fake weapons to school as part of their costumes, and we all understand that; if you're going to suspend a kid for bringing a plastic sword to school in September, you look inconsistent if you let him bring one to school on Oct. 31.
