A state panel headed by Gov. Tommy Thompson OK'd spending $147,000 Tuesday on a ``hall of governors'' portrait display.
Thompson, who abstained from voting on the project, pledged to raise half of the cost from private donors with the other half coming from taxpayers.
Virtually every governor in Wisconsin's history has had his picture painted after leaving office. A portrait today would cost about $10,000.
The Republican governor abstained from voting even though he said the project doesn't directly affect him.
