Three Japanese insurers, Asahi Mutual Life Company, Tokio Marine & Fire Company and Nichido Fire & Marine Company, have entered into an alliance that will eventually lead to a merger by 2003.
Under the agreement, the three insurers will launch a joint committee to study details of their alliance, including the type of cooperation, the name of the new insurance group and the schedule of the group formation, by year's end. They will initially develop new hybrid, "third-sector" products that combine life and property/casualty policies as well as asset-management-type products. The companies will also develop new sales channels, such as an e-commerce Web site.
