ERRY Murphy, the recently-appointed chief executive of Carlton Communications, confirmed his high standing in the City last week by pulling off a deal that guarantees Carlton's place at the heart of the ITV industry.
Murphy, who was brought in last summer to buttress Carlton's shaky position after its planned merger with United News & Media fell apart, brought his tough managerial skills to the fore by spearheading a knock-out bid for Granada's HTV.
In so doing, Carlton by-passed a number of rival bidders to seize a 40% share of UK advertising revenues, putting it side-by-side with Granada Media's 51%.
