Organized labor is making its biggest grass-roots effort ever to boost union voter support for Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Al Gore and other pro-union candidates.
"Our strength is in our grass roots," AFL-CIO President John Sweeney told The Washington Times. "Our strength is in our people power."
Democratic and Republican strategists acknowledge that the unions' get-out-the-vote strategy will be crucial in the elections.
The AFL-CIO and its member unions are mobilizing volunteers for the push to get out the vote. The unions' strategy includes a selective-targeting tactic, said Mr. Sweeney.
