Russian President Vladimir Putin, making his first visit to France since taking power, agreed with European leaders Monday on the urgent need to find a political solution in the breakaway region of Chechnya.
"We agreed on the need and the urgent nature of finding a ... political
settlement to the Chechnya problem," said French President Jacques Chirac during a press conference following morning meetings with Putin.
Putin's visit to Paris is ostensibly to attend an annual Russian-EU summit. But French officials also hope the four-day trip will warm frosty relations between the two countries.
