Jamaica Plants Rocked But Not KOd by Gilbert NEW YORK -- As Jamaica recovers from the devastation of Hurricane Gilbert, the island's numerous clothing factories assess the degree of damage inflicted by the disaster.

"Our early word is that apparel plants in the free zones of Kingston and Montego Bay have sustained water damage but are basically intact, and will be started up as soon as electricity is restored," said Derryck Cox, North American general manager of JAMPRO Ltd., Jamaica's investment, trade and industrial modernization agency. The bulk of the island's apparel industry is based in the free zones.
