An antitrust lawsuit launched by the US Justice Department against Northwest Airlines will begin trial today (1 November).

The trial was originally expected to commence last week, but was postponed so that Northwest Airlines could attempt to work out a settlement.

The case relates to Northwest Airlines' controlling stake in rival Continental Airlines and many airline industry observers believe that the outcome is crucial for the proposal by United Airlines to acquire US Airways.
