Gazza, the highest-rated player in the history of the game, will lose his crown after a reign of 15 years unless he produces a remarkable turnabout of form.
This giant of the chequered board must win the final two games against his young challenger, his protege and fellow Russian, Vladimir Kramnik.
If he wins this afternoon there will be a final game on Sunday. But the experts say Kasparov will finally be toppled.
