Ivory Coast's political leaders, mired in a seven-year power struggle following the death of its independence leader, Felix Houphouet-Boigny, realize that only a textbook-perfect, free and fair election for parliament next month can begin to restore trust within and credibility abroad.
"A power struggle was capped by a military coup and a rigged election, which has plunged the country into violence and uncertainty," a key figure in the politics of the West African nation said this week in an overseas telephone interview.
