Nov. 1--In a dispute over academic freedom to publish, a Southern California drug company attempted to block publication of a University of California study that it sponsored but revealed its once-promising AIDS medication did not work as hoped.
Immune Response Corp. of Carlsbad is now demanding as much as $10 million from the UC system and the study's lead investigator, Dr. James Kahn of UC San Francisco, to cover financial losses it says it will suffer from publication of the findings in today's issue of the prestigious Journal of The American Medical Assocation.
