The four great cities of Middle Europe _ Berlin, Prague, Budapest and Vienna _ are full of hotels and restaurants to fit every taste and wallet. Fodor's, Frommer's, Cadogan, Time Out, Lonely Planet, Rough Guide and a half dozen other publishers put out detailed guidebooks on sites and comforts.
What follows is a more personal, idiosyncratic list of places I've enjoyed in the four cities, along with some other tips and warnings to ensure your travels are memorable. I've cheated a bit and given myself five choices for the four cities in each category, so there's a "bonus" pick in each category.
