Related unsaturated naphthalene-derived components have been made (see Figure 1) by building outward from 1,5-diethers (1) using NBS to substitute the 4 and 8 positions. Stille coupling fails with the dibromide, but conversion into the driodide (BuLi followed by [I.sub.2]) gives access to (2). Similarly coupling to trimethylsilylethyne gives (3). A number of direct iodination procedures were tried with (1) but without success. The key to this chemistry is the efficient dibromination (Y Pan and Z Peng, Tetrahedron Lett., 2000, 41, 4537).
