It should have been a union of minds between two courageous and gifted people, even though she was a copper-haired beauty of 24 and he was 18 years her senior. Instead, the marriage of Julia Ward to Dr. Samuel Gridley Howe would bring disillusionment and unhappiness to her and bitter resentment (possibly fueled by jealousy) to him.
