BBC Radio WM started life as Radio Birmingham on November 9, 1970 - and was soon making national headlines itself.
The station went live against a backdrop of postal and power workers' strikes but an initiative to set up Homework by Radio for schools with no heating made sure it was grabbing air time across the country.
Radio Birmingham's first station manager was Jack Johnston, a tough Glaswegian described by one former member of staff as 'the grisly bear with the heart of a Teddy'.
