In the October 2000 issue of Circulation, pilot clinical trial results of PEG-Sak, a form of staphylokinase, developed by ThromboGenics Ltd., for treatment of acute myocardial infarction (heart attack), were reported.
Staphylokinase is a thrombolytic (blood-clot-dissolving) protein with a unique mechanism of fibrin-specificity, which makes it an attractive agent for treatment of thromboembolic disease. Natural staphylokinase is immunogenic, which limits its repeated use. Therefore, over 300 mutants of staphylokinase have been created to obtain a molecule with decreased immunogenicity but intact efficacy.
