THE MIDDLE CLASSES AND THE CULTURE CULT

WHEN I FIRST came to Australia it was to do some camerawork in the Northern Territory. A number of enlightened people led by W.E.H. Stanner and W.C. Wentworth had seen the importance of recording traditional Aboriginal culture; a special instrument for this purpose had been established named the Australian Institute of Aboriginal Studies; and one of its tasks was to document on film important aspects of the old-time way of life. Trained in cinematography in the USA, I arrived to take up a position as documentary filmmaker to the Institute late in 1965.
