First, a caveat. For almost everything stated here, the opposite is true. Never in Mindworks' 18-year history have students presented a more complicated picture of reality. The reason? The complex nature of American families.
We asked young people to compare their mothers and fathers as parents, with regard to attitudes, roles, discipline and responsibilities. The nearly 7,700 writers revealed a family landscape rife with stereotypes and contradictions, predictable generalities and confounding specifics.
