If history is written by the survivors, then Napoleon Bonaparte is the ultimate survivor. A prodigious writer who even tried his hand at fiction, Napoleon had an unrivaled instinct for propaganda. He wrote, uncommonly and eloquently, so that his inevitable and infamous downfall could not diminish his considerable stature on the world stage.
Filmmaker David Grubin's four-hour documentary, "Napoleon," tonight and next Wednesday at 9 p.m. on WGBH-TV (Ch. 2), captures the emperor's outsized personality in all its facets, from ingenious military ...
