Editor's Note: This is the second of a two-part story concerning the history of Checker Cab.
With World War II in the near future, Checker responded to the Army's call for a General Purpose vehicle, or GP, or Jeep. Checker built three prototype Checker Jeeps which had both four-wheel drive and four-wheel steering, and demonstrated them to Army officials along side the Ford, Willys, and Bantam Jeeps. However, the Army chose Willys' design.
