SCUBA DIVING IN THE CESSPOOL
WHEN Bill Buckley published God and Man at Yale in 1951, he didn't realize how good things were. Yes, indeed, there was a pervasive New Deal bias at Yale and other universities, plus what amounted to an agnostic orthodoxy, all of which he abundantly documented. Sophisticated academics yawned between cries of pseudo-outrage. The views Buckley attributed to them were exactly what they believed. The only surprise was that Buckley was surprised.
But before long, things went precipitously downhill. In 1951, after all, Yale's English Department was -- with the possible exception of Colombia's -- the best in the nation. Yale ...
