William Rainey Harper is often cited as a proponent of educational inclusiveness and is generally recognized for using the term "junior college" to describe the freshman and sophomore years of college. First president of The University of Chicago, he is given much credit for the creation of the junior college movement.

William Rainey Harper was born on July 26, 1856, in New Concord, Ohio. His father, Samuel, owned a local grocery store. True to the values of the time, William went to work in his father's store at an early age.
