William Rainey Harper is often cited as a proponent of educational inclusiveness and is generally recognized for using the term "junior college" to describe the freshman and sophomore years of college. William Rainey Harper was born on July 26, 1856, in New Concord, Ohio. His father, Samuel, owned a local grocery store.
