Fingerprinting Pros and Cons
As a longtime fan of The Progressive, I was disappointed to see you uncritically publish Bernie Huebner's essay denouncing Maine's attempt to protect children from rapists ("I Refuse," August issue).
FBI background checks on those who wish to be teachers is no more insulting, inconvenient, or unfair than background checks on those who wish to be gun owners. There are people in our society who have proven they cannot be trusted with a gun, and there are people in our society who have proven they cannot be trusted with a child. Our society has a responsibility to protect potential victims from both.
