Ralph Nader fell short of his electoral goal of garnering 5 percent of the vote on Tuesday but promised to help build the Green Party into a "long-term, progressive reform movement" in American politics.
The longtime consumer advocate-turned-presidential candidate got only 3 percent of the national vote, less than the 5 percent that would have entitled the Green Party to federal money in the 2004 elections.
"Those matching funds I view more as a convenience than as a necessity," he said at the National Press Club yesterday in Washington. "Third parties have to build themselves on the time, talent and creativity of citizens."
