Before Tuesday, when it found itself blamed in some quarters for miscalling the presidential election in Florida, Voter News Service was a little-known private polling and data-collection organization.
It was created by news organizations _ some of which are now criticizing it for providing wrong information from the one crucial state _ because there is no government agency that counts votes nationally.
VNS's job is to conduct exit polls during national primaries and general elections.
