Ford has taken a stake in the MXR digital radio consortium and says that by 2004 it will fir the equipment in all new cars it sells in the UK.
The move could give digital radio the necessary commercial impetus to drive take-up.
MXR was set up by Chrysalis Radio, Capital Radio, Jazz FM, Guardian Media Group, later joined by Soul Media, owner of Choice FM, and Psion and UBC Media Group.
The consortium will bid for digital radio multiplexes covering the Severn Estuary, South Wales, the West Midlands, Yorkshire, the north west and north east.
