NEW YORK -- Only in New York could the grand ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria hotel be transformed into a Venetian carnival to raise funds for an Israeli art museum.
That's just what happened at Monday's Venetian Ball for the American Friends of the Israel Museum, which raised $1.5 million in aid for the Israel Museum in Jerusalem in its annual gala.
The organization's president Barbara Lane, co-chairwoman Judy Steinhardt and committee member Madge Miller, as well as the museum's international chairwoman Maureen Cogan, donned special Venetian carnival masks. Some of these were custom-designed by Venice's mask-making workshop, Ca'Macana.
