It's a slightly overcast mid-fall morning on Amelia Island. Ray and Jody Hetchka are leading a group of novice kayakers in an excursion along a meandering tidal river. Leaves rustle, birds sing and paddles splash as Jody points out foliage indigenous to the area and keeps an eye out for an eagle she and Ray spotted earlier in the day. Paddling along next to Jody, one of the kayakers asks the former resident of southern New Hampshire what prompted her to pick up stakes and move her family to northern Florida four years ago.
