As the weather gets colder and the evenings grow darker, my mind turns to turnips. Not because I like to eat them, but because I will soon be required to carve one. It is almost time for the turnip-lantern parades, or Rabeliechtliumzuge which take place in neighbourhoods all over Switzerland around November 11, St. Martin's Day.
One evening this month, children and parents from our neighbourhood in Bern will gather on the kindergarten lawn at nightfall. The kids will be warmly dressed and quivering with excitement, lanterns in their hands.
