* Al Gore and George Bush aren't the only presidential candidates in history to find themselves in the middle of a dead heat. In 1800, presidential candidates Aaron Burr and Thomas Jefferson tied because of the voting procedures in the Electoral College at that time. The U.S. House of Representatives had to vote to determine the winner. Members of the House finally elected Jefferson after 36 ballots. Alexander Hamilton used his influence to sway the vote in for Jefferson. Burr, because of the way the Constitution was written at the time, ended up serving as vice president under Jefferson from 1801 to 1805.
