Bundled in a heavy parka, King Carl XVI Gustaf Folke Hubertus glanced around at the crowd waiting for him to officially open the cross-country ski race around the Royal Palace in Stockholm's old town, Gamla Stan.
"Well," said the king with a diffident smile, "welcome to my neighborhood."
It is hard to imagine a less royalistic comment, but then, it is hard to imagine a less royalistic monarchy than Sweden's.
