COAST GUARD ASSIGNS 50 TO PROCESS WORLD WAR II

MERCHANT MARINE VETERANS APPLICATIONS

WASHINGTON, May 18 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Coast Guard is assigning 50 clerks to process the more than 35,000 applications received from World War II merchant mariners who need discharge papers to obtain Veterans Administration benefits.

Eligibility for veterans benefits was granted to seamen in January by the Department of Defense; the Coast Guard maintains World War II merchant seamen records.
